Bill McFadden is the Association’s second President to hail from the USA. Along with his wife Taffe, he is a professional handler, breeder and judge. Bill has handled BIS at Westminster and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, bred and handled numerous Wire Champions and, in 2015, judged the breed at Montgomery County KC. A highly successful handler of a number of terrier breeds, including the great Crufts BIS winner, Ch Torum Scarf Michael, Bill’s own personal breed is the Wire.

Brought up with purebred dogs, Bill began showing in his late teens. Initially showing Cairns, he went to Canada to visit a breeder and fell in love with her other breed, the Wire Fox Terrier. He learnt more of the breed while working for George Ward and then realised that his schoolwork was being badly affected by his passion for dogs and that a choice must be made. A move to Southern California to work with terrier handlers Eddie and Lesley Boyes brought him into more contact with Wires and made him realise that he wanted to breed and show a breed that, when good, can take on all comers.

Bill got his first Wire from the Boyes - he was by Ch Elias vd Bismarquelle out of Ch Leila V Adorno – and started breeding Wires under the Random prefix. His first litter of Wires, co-bred with Rosemary Schmele, produced the first BIS winner, Ch Random Request. Her brother from a repeat breeding, Ch Wyrewood Wait Until Dark, was purchased by Ric Chashoudian and spent time at the Starring Kennel where he ‘did some nice producing’. Bill bred several times to Ch Sylair Special Edition and had champions including Ch Random Renegade of Santeric who was campaigned by George Ward to several BIS. In 1996 Bill won the breed at Montgomery with Ch Random Reaction under Harry O’Donoghue, still a magical memory as it was the dog’s first time shown as a Champion. He went on to win the Group at Westminster in 1997. The number of champions has now grown to around 70, including many BIS and Specialty winners.

Recently, Bill has enjoyed working with two English Champion bitches bred by Neil Dams: Ch Tamedale Harmony and Ch Tamedale Vanity, which he has added to his breeding program. These were joined by the German dog Ch Diamant vd Schonenberg who has sired very nicely for him.

To quote Bill’s own words, “I love this breed. I love the interest people around the globe have in them. I also love the different activities from obedience, agility, earth dog and barn hunt that they excel in - given it takes getting up very early to outfox a fox!”
